Fan in Support of Stephenie Meyer

Sat Aug 30, 2008, 8:57 AM
Midnight Sun is put on hold indefinitely.

Why?

Because idiots who call themselves fans leaked, read, and distributed the first twelve chapters.

First of all, that's completely illegal, especially since the book was slated to actually be published. This is stealing, and it is robbing Stephenie of hard earned money that she would get from people actually buying the book. It's dishonest, and it ruins the integrity of the final product. What kind of person does that to an author they supposedly adore? "I got my hands on these chapters somehow so I'm going to post them on the internet!!" And worse, the 'fan' who reads them. "Oh, I can't wait for Stephenie to finish Midnight Sun so I'm just going to read these leaked chapters!!" Steph has said time and again that she wants her books to be experienced in a certain way, and you ruin that effect when you read the leaked version. Not to mention that it was and is still in draft stages, so you're hurting Steph's artistic value and pride. Authors want nothing less than their best to be seen; if they choose to later show rough versions, then that is their choice. It's dishonest and pure hubris to think you have the right to steal and distribute someone else's intellectual property, especially before they're ready for it to be seen. A person's story is their baby; I'd be pretty pissed if someone kidnapped my baby and put it on display, too.

Secondly, I once again ask, how could you do that to Steph?? How many times has Steph said that her fans are the greatest in the world? How many times has she been proud to be our author? How many times has she declared how much she loves us and thanks us for our support?

And how many times has she been raped by the fandom in reply?

Stephenie Meyer has acted as the "second mom" figure to her fandom. She loves us. And in return, someone, who she has spent so much of her time doing extra things for so that we can cuddle up to our new Twilight saga addition, has completely betrayed her. And not just one someone. Many someones. Hundreds of someones. Yes, only one originally leaked it, but how many more jumped at this leak, read it, posted up spoilers for it, spread it and distributed it, and took pride in doing so? Those who read and distributed it are just as at fault as those who put it on the internet in the first place. How can you justify this as being okay?

Steph has worked so hard for us. She's really gone the extra mile. She manages her own myspace (unlike many celebrities), she talks to fans, she organizes proms, tours, readings, midnight release parties, quotes of the day, sneak peeks, all for us. She fought long and hard for a fourth book for us. Without her commitment to making us happy, we wouldn't have had Breaking Dawn. Love it or hate it, she fought long and hard for that book to be published, because she knew we wanted it. And Steph delivered. All she's ever asked in return is that we be honest, loyal fans, who help protect the integrity of her latest story. But no matter how much effort she puts out for us, it seems that some people within the fandom can't return the favor. Some people are so selfish that they have to have the chapters now, before Steph wants us to see them.

When you stoop that low, you're not a fan. You're just an selfish idiot who takes advantage of the person writing the story. If you really loved Twilight, if you really loved Steph, you wouldn't do that to her. You would wait. You would eagerly wait for her to finish and give her the pride and warmth of giving us Midnight Sun. She was going to write it and publish it because she knew we wanted it. And this is how she's been repaid. With the ultimate betrayal.

Not only that, but those of us who are honest fans, who are willing to stand in line, at midnight, in a crowded bookstore, not having once looked at any possibly leaked material, are now deprived of the story we were rooting for. We were doing the right thing, and true fans will continue to do the right thing and not read the leaked chapters, even if Steph has now posted them up. That's not a teaser; that's an author with no other option. Even now, she's trying to keep her fans honest. Even now, she's trusting us to make the right decision. But because of the leaked chapters, she's too upset to finish it. Stephenie still doesn't want us to read those chapters. But with no other choice, she's made them available to us.

I'm not going to read them. None of my friends are going to read them. Unlike some, we have some integrity. And unlike some, we respect Steph's wishes. Steph gave us the Twilight universe, and she has every right to take any further stories away. You wanted more? You wanted to see Jake and Renesmee later? You wanted to see what happens to Nahuel? You wanted perhaps an Alice and Jasper story?

Too bad. You probably won't get it. Steph has every right and every reason not to give it to you.

And all because some 'fans' decided to rape her yet again. Too bad it was the straw that broke the camel's back, isn't it?

I was really mad to hear about that too. They should be ashamed of themselves for doing that to her. Some fans they are!

Twilight is certainly not the best series I have ever read, but it does have a certain amount of guilty pleasure to it. I'm not reading it for the literary merit by any means; I'm reading it because I want my goddamn treacly vampire fluff and I want it now! Yes, there are times when I'm reading it when I can nearly feel my braincells dying, but it's still enjoyable all the same. I respect other people's choices in guilty pleasure lolfandoms, you should probably do the same.

Wow, at least you admit how much it can suck. I can read it at all. Most fans brick me for saying that lol. But I just can't stand Twilight. I can't stand it to the point of I usually have the urge to rip someones face off when I find out they love it. Maybe cause I'm a werewolf person? Or maybe it's just the books imply a creepy guy (vampire or not) stalking you is romantic.

I heard one story saying that it was actually Meyer herself who gave a copy to someone and it was them who spoiled the story.
Then again its probably a story sent around by a Meyer hater who wants to make her look bad.

However, if thats the case then she's made a foolish move by doing that. If she doesn't want people to be spoiled then she should have SHUT UP! .
(sorry, bit of a rant there)

As you can see I'm not much of a Twilight fan but I've only managed to read the first book before I decided to save my IQ from dropping further.
